The amount of inventory in a process that produces maximum throughput for a given bottleneck rate and the product cycle time. Critical WIP is defined as bottleneck rate divided by product cycle time. Throughput is reduced when WIP levels fall below critical WIP. Lead time increases when WIP levels exceed critical WIP.
