The number of items packed in a container being moved or shipped. It is determined by considering customer want as well as convenience in container size and weight. The pack-out quantity makes for more easily measured performance to schedule; three containers per hour can be made to be easily measured visually while a pile of finished pieces would not.
Pack-out quantity should not be confused with small lot size, which may vary within a process. For example, small aircraft engine blades at one facility have a pack-out quantity of five, because that is the number that can be easily transported to the next operation in one hand. The pack-out quantity at this facility is driven by the number of that blade in the engine.
